HUD Releases Housing First Study

by Richard W. Brown on September 16, 2007

in Ending Homelessness,Housing First

On September 12, 2997 HUD released a long-awaited study of Housing First programs entitled “The Applicability of Housing First Models to Homeless Persons with Serious Mental Illness.”

This study tracks program implementation and participant outcomes in three programs: Pathways to Housing in New York City, the Downtown Emergency Service Center (DESC) in Seattle, and Reaching Out and Engaging to Achieve Consumer Health (REACH) in San Diego.  The study concludes that Housing First models further HUD’s priority of addressing chronic homelessness.  However, housing stability and long-term improvements in mental illness and substance-abuse related symptomology can only be achieved with a long-term commitment to providing housing assistance.
