NJCDC holds Birch Arms Dedication Ceremony!
Photos and video are online!
The New Jersey Community Development Corporation (NJCDC) held a dedication ceremony on Friday, May 22, 2009 celebrating Birch Arms first anniversary. Birch Arms is a permanent, affordable and supportive housing project sponsored by NJCDC.
The three-story elevator building in Paterson contains fifteen studio apartments each with a private kitchen and full bathroom. The building design also incorporated sustainable features that promote energy efficiency and overall building performance through innovative sustainable design. There are common spaces for the residents to enjoy, such as a multi-purpose room with a kitchen, resident lounges on the second and third floors and backyard space with a patio and gazebo.
The event was well attended by members of the community, elected officials, project funding and development representatives, current residents and NJCDC staff. There were several speakers who spoke about the importance of a project like Birch Arms, which provides housing and supportive services to formerly homeless individuals with disabilities. The residents were active participants in the dedication ceremony with one of them speaking about what his home at Birch Arms has meant to him. Another resident read a poem that she wrote entitled “We’re Like Family.” All of the residents also took part in dedicating a tree in front of the building as well as taking guests on tours of their building.
