This funding, from HUD’s Veterans Affairs Supportive Housing Program (HUD-VASH), is a coordinated effort by HUD, VA, and local housing agencies to provide permanent housing for homeless veterans.
This is the first of two rounds of the 2011 HUD-VASH funding. HUD expects to announce the remaining funding by the end of this summer.
Monarch Housing as well as advocates on the national and local level established a goal of 60,000 new vouchers to meet the needs of chronically homeless veterans. There is a push for the VA to focus on chronically homeless veterans.
In addition, the VASH program could be improved by:
- Contracting out support services,
- Facilitating project basing with VASH vouchers,
- Improving the lease up rate, and
- Accepting housing first and reduction models.
