Three programs are working to end homelessness among veterans:
The Grant Per Diem (GPD) transitional housing program houses 25,000 veterans annually but many exit the program in homelessness. In the future, the VA is working to get veterans through the program more quickly and to also offer a transition in place program.
The VASH program has housed almost 30,000 veterans over the last 3 years. The VA hopes to get 60,000 additional vouchers from Congress by 2014.
The goal is to develop the tools so that every veteran is able to successfully exit homelessness.
Common Ground gave an update on its 100,000 Homes Campaign that is working to house 100,000 of the most vulnerable individuals who are living on the street. To date, the initiative has housed 10,000 individuals across the country.
In Washington DC, 38 people are being housed every month and 94% have remained in their housing for one year. Many of these individuals lived on the streets for 10 years or more!
