America’s Road Home: A collaboration to end homelessness

In December, the Monarch Housing’s Blog featured Trenton Mayor Douglas Palmer as he joined other mayors and public officials across America in solidifying his commitment to ending homelessness in our capitol city.
The New Jersey Advocacy Network to End Homelessness will be working with mayors, freeholders, county executives and other elected officials to become signatories of America’s Road Home Statement of Principles and Action and thus reiterate their commitment to ending homelessness. The New Jersey Advocacy Network and Monarch Housing, salute the following officials, who have signed on as of April 9, 2008, for their support and leadership. By signing this document they reinforced their commitment to end homelessness:

Why the emerging movement to unite for this cause? The eroding safety net for low-income families and individuals coupled with the persistent rise in the cost of living and increased mortgage market foreclosures has fostered a continual crisis of homelessness in the Garden State. According to The National Low Income Housing Coalition’s Out of Reach Report 2008, New Jersey is ranked 5th in the nation as the most expensive place to live for renters.
Furthermore, The Real Cost of Living in 2008: The Self-Sufficiency Standard for New Jersey reported that one in five New Jerseyans - 1.68 million adults and children - cannot afford to live without some kind of public assistance. Therefore, in the face of these worsening conditions and economic times, the America’s road home, statement and principles in action is a document that briefly outlines a plan of action and solidifies how all levels of government can collaborate to end the crisis of homelessness. By signing this document, one is recognizing the crucial need for change and that now, more than ever, is the time to collaborate for that very goal.
