Salem County’s United Way along with Freeholders, mayors, departmental staff, civic and faith based leaders had the opportunity to hear Phil Mangano of the Interagency Council on Homelessness on March 13, 2008. United Way CEO’s Rebecca Purchase of Salem County and Dan Altilio of Hudson County introduced Mr. Managano. Mr. Mnagano’s comments focused not only on the importance of implementing the Salem County Ten Year Plan to End Homelessness but on the importance of the three R’s: research, resources and results. On February 20, 2008, the Salem County Board of Chosen freeholders adopted a draft plan to end homelessness in ten years.
“Homelessness is a serious problem that requires serious and thoughtful action to address it,” said Freeholder Jeffrey J. Hogan, (pictured on the right) chair of the county Health and Social Services Committee and a member of the task force. “This plan will help guide all of our efforts to address this problem and make sure that we are not leaving anyone behind.” To read all of Freeholder Hogan’s comments click here.
“It’s a sizable project, but there is a return. With people working, they are able to put back into the community,” Rebecca Purchase of the United Way said. The United Way chaired the planning process “It is a lot cheaper in the long run than the Band-Aid solutions … Renter’s assistance, food assistance, trips to the emergency room because they are sick. Those are Band-Aid solutions. Rather than a price tag, I would call this an investment.”

SALEM Where will you sleep tonight?
This is a question whose answer by many who live here will shock you into the reality that homelessness does exist in Salem County.
On Jan. 29 an estimated 60 volunteers will work in coordination with Project Homeless Connect to conduct a Point In Time Survey to assess the number of those in need of shelter and provide basic essentials to them.
Street team volunteers will pound the pavement from mid-morning until dusk reaching out to those succumbing to harsh weather during this winter season.
Four individuals will comprise a team with each team preferably having a bi-lingual member.
As it’s commonly known, those with mental illness are the biggest challenge to bring in from the cold because this is a voluntary process. No one is forced to leave the streets. However, they will still be offered help and supplies even if they choose not to go with a volunteer to one of the two facilities being used as a base to provide services to these individuals.
