New Jersey held Homeless Persons’ Memorial Day on December 21, 2011. This is the day with the least amount of light and also has the longest night. At this time of year, as many of us prepare for holiday and end of the year celebrations, this day, while bittersweet, is an opportunity to think of and assist the individuals and families among us who will experience homelessness this winter. These memorials remind us that healthcare and housing is a human right that many of us take for granted. The arrival of long, cold winter nights reminds us of the growing problem of homelessness in NJ.

After 7 years the modular units arrived last week and in the last three days the home was “put together”. The units travelled from Pennsylvania on flatbed trucks over a two week period and were stored nearby waiting for assembly. It was amazing to watch how they raise and fit the pieces together within ¼ of an inch! Over the next few weeks the units will be bolted and strapped together before all the finishing touches get done. The new tenants will move in by November 2011.
