Paper Urges Greater Use of EITCs to Stimulate Local Economies

The Brookings Institution has released a new paper exploring how full utilization of the federal Earned Income Tax Credit would benefit families and communities. The report is part of the Living Cities Policy Series of papers commissioned by Living Cities to stimulate conversations about critical urban issues. According to the paper, “many cities now recognize that more funds are invested in their cities annually through EITC than through many traditional ‘urban’ federal programs.” Acknowledging that eligible taxpayers aren’t realizing full benefits of the EITC, the paper urges federal leaders to get involved in state and local efforts to promote the credit and related tax benefits.
