This was in the Herald News. We agree with his comments about the need for more newspaper coverage of the homeless crisis in NJ.
Homeless issue needs a hearing
Re: “What lies beneath” (Front Page, April 2)
Don’t know if I would go as far as to call Passaic a “fun” place, but then I’ve had limited contact with the area. I hope that this is not going to be the only article on this problem.
Squatters and homeless are a statewide issue, and there is much that the public agencies concerned could be doing in the way of shelters, meal programs and utilizing the disadvantaged much like the WPA programs during the Depression of the 1930s. But, that would take a public agency (or agencies) that want to put forth effort.
Maybe a series of articles could shame them into action. Something along the lines of the type of reporting I’ve grown used to from Jeff Page, Mike Kelly, John Cichowski and the other stellar writers that have gotten “ink” on these hallowed pages.
I believe with time and effort Meredith Mandell will join this roster. The public looks to the Herald News and The Record because we know that we will get quality reporting.
