We encourage you to join the Network for this important event on THURSDAY, MAY 10, 2007, 9:30 am – 2:00 pm at the State House, Room to be announced. (Please note the new date and check our website for additional information about this event!)
Network members and staff will meet with legislative representatives from around the state to educate them about housing and community development issues and build support for important policies New Jersey needs to improve our state (click here for our 2007 policy priorities). Also, we are expecting that the Assembly Housing Committee will hear testimony on one of our priority legislative initiatives. Assembly Bill 1343, sponsored by Assembly Majority Leader Bonnie Watson Coleman (D-15), promotes the production of affordable housing for very low income households by requiring all state housing programs to target 25% of all affordable housing units created, to be dedicated for very low- income households. Senator Shirley Turner (D-15) is sponsoring a companion bill in the Senate.
In addition to being heard in our state’s capital, this is a great opportunity for individuals and organizations interested in honing their lobbying skills. Learn tricks of the trade for communicating with decision-makers in formal and informal settings. Participants will also have an opportunity to take a tour of the State House with an advocacy expert and get an insider’s view of the legislative process from where it all happens. Groups may also attend legislative hearings. Registration is required! Contact Juanita Howard at 973-286-0086. Refreshments will be served.
FYI: The term “lobbying” originated in New Jersey – since our part-time legislators do not have staffed offices in the State House, much of the communication between advocates and representatives starts in “the lobby.”
