Definition of homeless children and youth

As we reported on August 2, 2010, according to a report released by First Focus and the National Association for the Education of Homeless Children and Youth (NAEHCY) A Critical Moment: Child & Youth Homelessness in Our Nation’s Schools – identified NJ as the state with the fifth highest increase in the number of homeless children and youth identified in public schools. The 84% growth in numbers of homeless students reported between 2006- 2007 and 2008-2009 occurred prior to the infusion of homeless education dollars from the ARRA stimulus fund. Therefore, the increase is not attributable to more federal dollars available to identify and enroll more homeless children.

We now are able to offer information about the 6,397 homeless students counted in each school district. Of these students the breakdown by living situation was:
