Legislation Improves Federal Coordination of Veterans’ Housing Services
On March 27, 2012, the House passed the “Homes for Heroes Act,” HR 3298. The legislation, sponsored by Representative Al Green (D-TX):
creates the position of Special Assistance for Veterans Affairs at HUD that would be charged with ensuring that homeless veterans have access to housing and homeless assistance programs and
also requires an annual submission of a veterans supplemental to the Annual Homeless Assessment Report (AHAR.) The Administration has submitted a Veterans AHAR for the past two years, but it is not explicitly mandated to do so.
The legislation has been sent to the Senate where it awaits further action. In the House, all twelve (12) members of the NJ delegation voted in favor of HR 3298.
