On August 31, 2012, The New York Times featured a photo slideshow of homeless families in Essex County and also Florida and Wisconsin. The brief accompanying article highlights the fact that the neither presidential campaign has put much focus on homeless children and their families. Photo journalist Craig Blankenhorn showcases the children of all ages who are living in very temporary situations, hotels, cars and on the streets and tells their stories with the help of his pictures.
And he writes, “Recently, I spent a week with homeless families in Tampa, Fla., site of the Republican convention. The common refrain of the parents was this: ‘It’s the kids — they don’t deserve this.’”
How can we use photos and personal stories to give voice to the homeless in our counties, state and nation?
