Addressing why he helped write the book, Ryan responded,
“These kids are homeless through no fault of their own. They’re running from violence and abuse. Or a parent died. Or poverty crushed their families. Or drug addiction scalded their homes and they have no one left to look out for them.”
The book profiles six homeless teens, including one from Newark. These teens living on the streets ended up homeless for a variety of reasons including:
Running away from abusive parents;
Being kicked out of their homes because they were gay; and
Aging out of the foster care system with nowhere to go.
The book also gives voice to the estimated 1.6 million young people in the United States and Canada who run away or are kicked out of their homes each year.
