Sequestration Shrinks Government

Homeless and Mentally Ill Among Those Impacted

The Real Cost of Shrinking GovernmentIn its February 16, 2013, New York Times, the Opinion Pages included an illustrative chart and opinion piece that showed “The Real Cost of Shrinking Government.”

If sequestration goes into effect as scheduled on March 1, 2013, domestic programs will be reduced by 5% and the impact of that would include (but is certainly not limited to):

  • 125,000 families would be put at sudden risk of homelessness because their rental assistance would end; and
  • 373,000 serious mentally ill adults and seriously emotionally disturbed children would most likely lose their treatments.

Senate Republicans have rejected the Senate Democrats’ proposal to replace cuts with tax revenues and targeted reductions and, “Their refusal to consider new revenues means that on March 1, Americans will begin learning how austerity really feels.”
