Unemployment Benefits Left Out of Budget Deal

Pelosi Chairs House Hearing

Nancy PelosiOn December 5, 2013, the Democratic Steering and Policy Committee, chaired by Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi (D-CA), held a hearing on expiring unemployment benefits.

The committee encouraged Members of Congress to act to prevent more than one million Americans from losing their unemployment benefits on December 28, when unemployment benefits are set to expire, and a further 3.6 million Americans from losing benefits next year.

Since the budget committee chairs did not include an extension of unemployment benefits and the House has adjourned for the year, Democrats will likely need to find another avenue for doing so, for instance, through bundling them with expiring provisions.
