Senators Patrick Leahy (D-VT) and Kelly Ayotte (R-NH) are circulating a Dear Colleague supporting $115 million for reentry programs authorized under the Second Chance Act. The deadline to sign on to this letter is Wednesday, April 9, 2014.
President Obama recently released his Fiscal Year 2015 budget, which allocates $115 million for the Second Chance Act. The focus will now turn to Congress as they begin considering funding for Second Chance and other important justice programs. It is critical that Congress understand the widespread support for the Second Chance Act across the country.
Senator Al Franken (D-MN) is circulating a Dear Colleague letter supporting funding for the Mentally Ill Offender Treatment and Crime Reduction Act (MIOTCRA) in FY 2015. The deadline to sign on to this letter is Tuesday, April 8, 2014.
In 2004, Congress authorized the Justice and Mental Health Collaboration Program through MIOTCRA to improve responses to people with mental disorders who are involved with the criminal justice system. The Franken letter supports funding for innovative programs that bring together mental health and criminal justice agencies to address the unique needs of persons with mental health disorders.
