HUD Budget Cut to the Bone

Take Action on Appropriations Process
Save Section 8 and Homeless Funding

HUD Budget Cut to the BoneThe House Transportation, Housing and Urban Development Appropriations Subcommittee (THUD) is holding its mark up tomorrow and includes no restoration of vouchers lost to the sequester, flat funding of homeless assistance and 30% cut in HOME funds.

The draft bill was released this morning. No amendments are expected at tomorrow’s mark up, but are expected when the full House Appropriations Committee takes up the bill (which is expected to happen in about two weeks.

The funding news for critical HUD programs was devastating.

Some highlights of the House THUD Appropriations bill include:

  • No restoration of the 40,000 vouchers lost because of sequesters but not restored by FY14 bill. There had been a $320 million request to fund the restored vouchers. The funding in the THUD bill will barely cover existing vouchers that are currently in use plus the new VASH vouchers,
  • Flat funding for homeless assistance programs. There had been a request for a $300 million increase in FY 2015 for HUD’s McKinney-Vento Homeless Assistance Grants, and
  • $300 million was slashed from HOME funding.

As we learn more we will provide updates.

Call your Congressman today and tell him that funding these programs at these levels will devastate efforts to end homelessness in New Jersey.
