Senate Bill for Tax Relief for Major Disaster Areas

Booker and Menendez Support
Legislation as Original Co-Sponsors

Senator Robert MenendezThe Senate, on July 22, 2014, S 2634, a bill to provide tax relief for major disaster areas declared in 2012, 2013, and 2014, and for other purposes was re-introduced.

This legislation is a companion piece to HR 5082, a tax relief bill that was recently introduced in the House by Representatives by Congressman Pascrell and Reed. That bill has 15 Republicans and 15 Democrats signed on.

Senator Mark Pryor (D-AR) has sponsored the new Senate bill, and Senator Vitter (R-LA) is an original co-sponsor – the first Republican on the Senate bill. Senators Cory Booker and Robert Menendez are among the original co-sponsors of the legislation.

This legislation would provide additional Low Income Housing Tax Credits (LIHTCs) for areas impacted by a federally declared disaster in 2012, 2013, and 2014, as well as for communities impacted by Hurricane Irene and Tropical Storm Lee in 2011. Communities in 24 states including New Jersey would benefit.

Back on the House side, now is the time to continue to build bipartisan support for the House bill, HR 5082. Please reach out to your House member and encourage him to co-sponsor this critical legislation.
