Castro opened with giving a “huge thank you for the work that you do giving voice to people living on the streets” to the audience of over 1,700 people gathered for the conference.
“Those experiencing homelessness aren’t problems, they are people and each of them has a story.”
He continued with “they don’t need a handout, they need housing.”
His first priority in telling people “HUD is a department of opportunity.”
He made an advocacy push for Congress to increase homelessness funding by $300 million – added funding that could save lives. And spoke of his vision is the day when we have “effectively ended homelessness.”
