Hudson Event Scheduled for December 19
At the end of December, communities around New Jersey will be holding National Homeless Persons’ Memorial Day events. These memorials offer providers, government officials, advocates and other members of the community an opportunity to remember the homeless men and women who died over the past year.
As background, each year since 1990, on or near the first day of winter and the longest night of the year, the National Coalition for the Homeless (NCH), National Consumer Advisory Board (NCAB), and National Health Care for the Homeless Council (NHCHC) have co-sponsored National Homeless Persons’ Memorial Day to bring attention to the tragedy of homelessness and to remember our homeless friends who have paid the ultimate price for our nation’s failure to end homelessness.
In an effort to maximize the impact of the day, the national co-sponsors encourage local and statewide organizations to hold memorials of their own. Last year, more than 157 cities in 40 states, including 6 New Jersey cities/counties, including the District of Columbia sponsored events to honor those who had died and to recommit to the task of ending homelessness.
To date, Hudson County has scheduled its memorial and we will update with information about other events as we get it.
