Speak Up for the Homeless During Memorial Day Recess

Remind Your Member of Congress
That NJ Needs Vouchers Restored

Speak Up for the Homeless During Memorial Day RecessCongress is in recess until Monday, June 1, 2015. Your Representative likely will be at work in his or her home district for the balance of the week.

Please use this opportunity to talk to your Member of Congress directly and urge him or her to increase federal voucher funding, fully fund homeless assistance funding and protect the National Housing Trust Fund.

The U.S. House of Representatives could consider their appropriation bill for housing programs as early as the week of June 1.

The House Transportation, Housing and Urban Development, and Related Agencies (THUD) Appropriations bill passed in committee on May 13, 2015 includes significant cuts to essential housing programs and redirects all funding that had been dedicated to the National Housing Trust Fund.

Here are some points to stress when speaking with your Representative about the House THUD bill:

  • Provide funding to restore all Housing Choice Vouchers lost due to sequestration in 2013.
  • End the sequester caps and unnecessary austerity cuts.
  • Support amendments to remove the NHTF from the appropriations bill.
  • Fully fund the McKinney-Vento Homeless Assistance program.
