Using Medicaid to Finance Housing-Related Services

Reimbursement for Housing-Related Activities and Services

Center for Medicaid ServicesThe Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) recently released an information bulletin for state Medicaid agencies noting the specific housing-related activities and services that can be reimbursed for Medicaid covered individuals.

In conjunction with this release, the National Alliance to End Homelessness (the Alliance) CSH, the Technical Assistance Collaborative, and the National Health Care for the Homeless Council encourage housing and service providers to take note of this informational bulletin and use it as a tool to engage state Medicaid agencies.

Contained in the bulletin are the specific housing – related activities and services that can be reimbursed for Medicaid covered individuals. Activities and services include transition to housing as well as housing retention services. In addition, the bulletin outlines the Medicaid authorities and demonstrations that allow for these services as well as opportunities where states can fund collaborative activities to link Medicaid with housing – related resources.

The bulletin states that CMS and SAMHSA will provide additional guidance on housing – related services that can be provided for persons experiencing chronic homelessness
