Prioritize Key HUD Programs
With the budget deal signed into law, Nondefense Discretionary United (NDD United) is turning its efforts to ensuring that an omnibus package is passed and a December 11, 2015 government shutdown is avoided. Important to ensuring passage of the year end spending bill is ensuring that damaging, politically charged, riders do not make their way into the proposed bill.
Democrats have already vowed to block a final bill that includes “poison pill riders.” There is also strong Republican support for keeping at least some riders in the final appropriations bill.
Whether or not riders affect your specific community, we all stand to lose from an omnibus that is riddled with riders and in fact, need to pass an omnibus to capitalize on the sequestration relief we all spent the year fighting for.
In order to end homelessness, it is critical that Congress prioritize 3 key HUD programs by:
- Providing $2.480 billion for HUD’s McKinney-Vento Homeless Assistance Grants program, including $40 million for homeless youth initiatives.
- Providing $18.05 billion to renew all Housing Choice Vouchers in use at the end of 2015 and $470 million to restore the remaining 60,000 vouchers lost due to sequestration.
- Not raiding the National Housing Trust Fund (NHTF) to fund other programs.
