On July 25th, Monarch Housing Associates and 35 other partners hosted the 2018 Congressional Reception at the Dirksen Senate Auditorium in Washington D.C. and social media amplified the messages. Advocates from all over the state of New Jersey gathered to listen to impact speakers share their experiences with homelessness.
If you missed the reception, you can still find out what you missed at the event by using social media. The Congressional Reception is on several social media platforms that you can follow.
Videos of all speakers, both impact speakers and elected officials, are available to view on YouTube.
We have a three minute highlights video which we encourage you to share on social media.
- The message that speakers wanted to leave with their elected officials is that any cuts to housing would be devastating to them and their families.
- Despite the increasing need for affordable housing, the supply is extremely low.
- Any cuts to federally funded affordable housing could cause millions of families to lose their homes.
In fact, housing is tied to many other important aspects of life, including health, education, happiness, employment, and more. Without a home, it is nearly impossible to succeed in any of these other aspects.
This is why the message of the reception was that opportunity truly starts at home, in support of the Opportunity Starts at Home campaign launched earlier this year.
As a result, Monarch Housing Associates and those who attended the Congressional Reception used these hashtags:
- #NJHillDay, and
- Tagged the @OppStartatHome campaign on all social media accounts so all users could follow this year’s Congressional Reception.
Over 350 advocates joined Monarch Housing Associates in Washington D.C. Many of these advocates took photos with a sign that featured these hashtags. Please view the photo album to see some of the courageous people that attended the reception.
