Senators Cory Booker and Bob Menendez Help Low Income Families Move to Opportunity and Addressing & Solving the U.S. Affordable Housing Crisis
The first bill would help low income families move to areas of opportunity and the second bill would address the impacts of the U.S. affordable housing crisis and propose solutions.
Both the “Housing Choice Voucher Mobility Demonstration Act of 2018” (S. 2945) and the “Task Force on the Impact of the Affordable Housing Crisis Act of 2018” (S. 3231) were introduced by Senator Todd Young (R-IN).
The “Housing Choice Voucher Mobility Demonstration Act of 2018” would help more low income households using housing vouchers move to communities of their choice.
- Communities of Choice provide access to jobs with decent pay, good schools, transportation, and healthcare.
- Through the demonstration, the U.S. Dept. of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) and public housing agencies (PHAs) would be able to develop new models for improving voucher mobility and provide counseling to help HUD-assisted families move to areas of opportunity.
The “Task Force on the Impact of the Affordable Housing Crisis Act of 2018” would establish a bipartisan task force to evaluate and create recommendations regarding the nation’s affordable housing crisis.
- The task force would examine and quantify how the affordable housing crisis impacts people’s lives and increases costs for non-housing programs (health, education, social services, and others) at the federal, state, and local levels.
- The task force will also make recommendations to Congress on how to use affordable housing to improve the effectiveness of other federal programs.
Both Senators Cory Booker and Bob Menendez attended the July 25 Congressional Reception in Washington, DC and heard first hand from constituents whose lives have been impacted by homelessness and the affordable housing crisis.
At the Congressional Reception, Senator Cory Booker declared that “Housing is a right.” And Senator Bob Menendez told the audience, “We cannot lose sight of what we are fighting for – an affordable place for every New Jersey resident to call home.”
