NJ Assembly Members: Protect NJ’s Most Vulnerable

Allow Lifetime Emergency Assistance and Extend it to New Jerseyans Most Vulnerable

On Monday, December 17, 2018, two bills that would protect our most vulnerable residents by providing them with Emergency Assistance will go before the entire New Jersey General Assembly for a vote. And you can spend a few minutes today to take action to help prevent homelessness.

Monarch Housing Associates is joining the Housing and Community Development Network of New Jersey (the Network) in urging you to call your assembly members and urge them to vote in favor of both of these bills:

  • A1887/S1965 Allows an individual to receive additional lifetime emergency assistance.
  • This bill is critical for individuals facing a crisis in their life to get needed help. Current law prevents NJ residents from getting Emergency Assistance again; this law would allow residents to get help after a 7 year window.
  • Sponsored by Asm. Mukherji and Sen. Sweeney.
  • Passed the Senate unanimously. 6.7.18.
  • S866/A3294 Extends Emergency Assistance to people who are caretakers of disabled dependents, permanently disabled, over 60 or who are chronically unemployable.
  • Sponsored by Sen. Sweeney and Asw. Vainieri Huttle
  • This version of the bill comports with changes made by the Governor.

How can you help support the passage of these bills in the Assembly?

  • Click here to locate your Assembly member and get their contact information.
  • Once you locate your Assembly member, please call them and say: “My name is _________ from __________ and I urge the Assemblyman/woman to vote YES for A1887 and S866 to protect our most vulnerable residents by providing Emergency Assistance.”

Once you have called, please email Arnold Cohen, Senior Policy Coordinator, at the Network so that the Network can keep track of the number of calls being made. Let Arnold know if you have any questions.

The expansion of emergency assistance benefits would prevent homelessness. The Network advocated for the expansion during its Annual Hill Day. Discussions with staff and legislators led to the introduction of legislation.
