About Richard’s leadership of the annual Congressional Reception, Bob Kley writes,
“Over the past four years I have traveled to Washington, DC in July, either on the hottest day of the year or one in one of the last years, the wettest day of the year. I make this trip to D.C. along with over 300 of Richard Brown’s only friends.
The annual New Jersey Congressional Reception has quickly become an annual tradition. It brings together the housing efforts of advocates from each of New Jersey’s Congressional Districts to engage with our elected federal legislators.
The bus rides begin with departures from New Jersey before dawn and often with the last stops in New Jersey at close to midnight. But each moment of the day recharges one’s advocacy batteries.
Under Richard’s leadership, hundreds of individuals, those with disabilities, veterans, and experience with homelessness, have shared their stories with New Jersey’s U.S. Representatives and Senators.
One of my favorite memories happened over three years in 2016. Richard was hosting the program on the day of the Congressional Reception. And the well-planned schedule of when members of our Congressional delegation were expected to arrive fell apart.
At one point, there were four members of the House along with U.S. Senator Menendez in the room. There was potential chaos where each elected official could have “competed” for his own time at the podium to speak. But Richard, being the cool guy that he is, managed the dais with charm and tact. And instead of competing for attention, U.S. Representatives Smith, Payne, Pallone, Andrews each spent time complementing each other and collectively agreeing on the importance of our issues.
The three Democratic members even complemented the sole Republican – U.S. Representative Smith in an amazing display of bipartisanship. Richard was to each their “best friend,” focusing with each on the issue of affordable housing and the stories in the room and rather than on any political differences.
One of Richard’s unique talents is bringing people together- to see the common ground and share the goal of being on the same team. This is the standard that Richard set for Monarch and it will continue under the leadership of Taiisa Kelly, Asish Patel and the Monarch Board of Trustees.
