Building a Necessary and Secure Foundation for Healthy Communities

Opportunity Starts at Home Campaign Provides Theme for July 24 Congressional Reception

Monarch Housing Associates and our twenty-three partners, to date, will hold a Congressional Reception in Washington, D.C. on Wednesday, July 24, 2019. The Congressional Reception will take place in the Dirksen Senate Auditorium from 12:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m.

This year, the theme of the Congressional Reception will be: Opportunity Starts at Home: Building a Necessary and Secure Foundation for Healthy Communities.
We expect 300 attendees to join us in buses to travel down to D.C. on the morning of July 24.  We hope you consider joining us this year in Washington, D.C. Please save the date and stay tuned for more details regarding registration for the event.
Speakers from each of New Jersey’s twelve congressional districts will be discussing the theme Opportunity Starts at Home: Building a Necessary and Secure Foundation for Healthy Communities and reminding us that:
• Housing is a right,
• Housing is healthcare and
• Housing creates healthy communities.
The policy priorities include, but are not limited to, expanding the national Housing Trust Fund (HTF) and advocating for the Low-Income Housing Tax Credit (LIHTC) program.  Nationally, Opportunity Starts at Home is a long-term, multi-sector campaign staffed by the National Low Income Housing Coalition (NLIHC) to meet the rental housing needs of the nations’ low-income people.

To learn more about the Opportunity Starts at Home Campaign, you can visit the Housing & Community Development Network of NJ’s website and click on “Programs and Services.”

To broaden the Campaign’s multi-sector effort and generate widespread support, Opportunity Starts at Home selected seven state partners to receive capacity-building grants to broaden and diversify each state’s housing coalition to engage other sectors. The Network is the New Jersey state partner.  Arnold Cohen, Senior Policy Advisor for The Network, is coordinating the Network’s efforts.  Please communicate with Arnold at about your interest in supporting the national Opportunity Starts at Home Campaign and/or if you’d like to work further on the Campaign.

One of the sectors engaged in the Opportunity Starts at Home Campaign is Health & Housing.
Opportunity Starts at Home reminds us that health care advocates are housing advocates. In addition to linking together stable housing and long-term health, the campaign highlights that families living in affordable housing are able to spend more on quality healthcare and food.

Specifically, when provided housing assistance, children have less developmental delays, adults have better physical and mental health, and seniors are less depressed. The campaign makes the case that a quality affordable home is a prescription for good health.

Leading up to the 2019 Congressional Reception, all who register to attend will be given opportunities to learn about how progress in New Jersey relates to our theme Opportunity Starts at Home: Building a Necessary and Secure Foundation for Healthy Communities and how to continue advocacy with our elected officials in Washington, D.C. after the event is over.
