Recently, the Asbury Park Press conducted a two-part video investigation into life at a homeless encampments in Neptune.
Homelessness in the suburbs is often hidden and there are not enough shelter beds to house the homeless in many suburban areas or enough affordable housing.
“My heart bleeds for the homeless,” said Lisa Monterrosa. “There’s a place for less fortunate people, and it’s not the woods of Colwick.”
If a law criminalizes sleeping outside when shelter space is otherwise unavailable, then in the eyes of the DOJ that law violates the Constitution.
To end homelessness, we must link people experiencing un-sheltered homelessness, including people living in encampments, with permanent housing.
